- "Downstairs the kitchen is dark and quiet. I release the blind with a snap put on the kettle and make some treacly black coffee. Despite Luke`s food awareness drive which has lasted six months now without any perceptible change in our health, coffee addiction is something I have been unable to crack. Sometimes the craving for it is so strong I long to skip the night altogether just to get to the pleasure of the first morning sip – not as dump as it sounds. Luke, when I first met him, was such a heavy smoker that more than once I caught him setting his alarm for the middle of the night in order to have a quick interval fag.
The hot liquid slides down my throat, crashes like a waterfall on to my stomach then spreads out into a dozen streams, black mingling with red, frothingto a dark billberry colour as it run the rapids of ligaments and bones, the weight of it pushing the veins up like computer cabling. It`s my Popeye`s Spinach, my Beetlejuice, and when it hits my brain, seconds later, I can feel the fog clearing from my brain as if someone has obligingly put a wind machine to a hole in my skull."
